One of the distinguishing characteristics of the Atlas Construction System is that wood is not part of the primary structural system. The structural strength of the building is provided entirely by the reinforced-concrete shell formed by the foundations, walls, and dome.
Timber is used only where appropriate for the ventilated roof structure above the concrete dome and for interior architectural finishes where desired.
The Starting Point - The Dome
One of the first engineering challenges was determining how to transition from a square floor plan to a structurally efficient dome. After numerous design trials, we concluded that the transition had to begin at the four corners of the square, gradually converging toward the center of the dome. Once we decided how high we wanted the dome to be, we started designing what we came to call the "Diagonal Beams" from each corner of the square to the center at the desired height. It took many design iterations to arrive at the most effective and structurally efficient solution.
The Evolution of the System
During the development of the Atlas Construction System, considerable attention has been given to simplifying construction while maintaining structural integrity.
Also, one of the most significant developments has been the introduction of standardized steel wall panels. These panels serve as permanent structural alignment frames during construction, allowing the walls to be assembled quickly while accurately positioning the reinforcement, electrical conduits, plumbing services, and permanent EPS insulation before the concrete is placed.
The standardized panel system also reduces site fabrication, improves dimensional accuracy, and creates a repeatable construction process suitable for future large-scale production.
From Foundation to Dome
Once the foundations are complete, the steel wall panels are assembled and connected to form the module's perimeter. The team then installs reinforcing steel, permanent insulation, electrical conduits, plumbing services, and other embedded components within the steel wall system.
After the walls have been prepared, the curved steel dome beams are erected, forming the framework that supports the permanent dome formwork. Once all structural components have been inspected, the team places reinforced concrete, creating a continuous structural shell that extends from the foundations to the highest point of the dome.
