The Wall Needed More Than Reinforcement

We already had reinforced concrete walls and knew what the finished structural shell needed to accomplish. The question became: how do we make that system repeatable, accurate, and practical to construct?

1. Why a Steel Wall Panel

This is the important conceptual section.

The panel isn't simply additional reinforcement. It establishes the geometry of the wall before concrete is ever placed. It gives us a repeatable structural framework onto which reinforcement, insulation and other components can be organized.

And importantly, it helps construction proceed as an assembly process rather than recreating the wall from scratch on every project.

2. Standardization

Individual panels are fabricated repeatedly to the same specification and then connected on site to establish the perimeter of the building.

The objective was not to standardize the house. It was to standardize the method used to build it.

That distinction is important because Atlas houses can still have different layouts, openings, architectural treatments, climates, etc.

4. Speed Through Preparation

Much of the dimensional work that would ordinarily be performed on the construction site can instead be predetermined before the components arrive. On site, the work increasingly becomes positioning, connecting, aligning and completing known components.

5. Why Atlas Chose Steel

Accuracy, strength, relatively low bulk, fabrication, transportation, repeatability, and the ability to create standardized connections.

The steel wall panel was not developed simply to make the wall stronger. It was developed to make the Atlas Construction System buildable as a repeatable system.

More Than a Structural Frame

The standard steel wall panel is 9' high × 5' wide × 6" thick. A second panel uses the same structural arrangement and dimensions but is 2.2 feet high. These shorter header panels are used above doors, windows, and other openings.

The panels are quickly assembled on site and bolted together to form the wall structure according to the architectural design of the building.

Reinforcing steel and some building services are incorporated within the panel framework. EPS panels are then secured to the interior and exterior faces, providing permanent insulation while also serving as the forms for the concrete.

In this way, the steel panels do more than strengthen the finished structure. They organize several stages of construction within one repeatable framework, helping the building progress faster while reducing additional site work and labor.
